Dr. Templeton:
Bone cancer is not contagious. We don’t know what causes bone cancer, but there isn’t anything at this point that indicates that it’s contagious, and that’s a question that comes up frequently, especially with kids.

When I have children who have bone cancer, we have programs where we go out to talk to their schools, that we have an educator that goes out to work with the children in the school and work with the teachers. Sometimes I go along in those trips. It’s fun to educate the kids so that they understand that their classmate is going to be different when they get back to school, but one of the questions that comes up frequently is, “Can I catch it?” because they hear cancer, especially for younger kids, they are not mature enough to really understand what that means other than it’s something bad, and they are very concerned that it’s something that they can catch.
