Dr. Terris:
Typically it involves surgery. So that’s the mainstay so most patients end up having a total thyroidectomy, removal of all of the thyroid tissue. Occasionally, we need to remove lymph nodes as well, especially if they are involved, obviously involved with cancer, and then depending on how much cancer there is, it’s oftentimes necessary to give postoperative radioactive iodine. It’s a very good way of delivering targeted radiation just to the cells that harbor the cancer. It’s one of the reasons why patients with this type of cancer do so well.
