Dr. Vashi:
You put that patient as if that patient is your mother and it’s very easy to make decisions and these decisions sometimes are very tough. You will come across a lot of patients where, you know, we have done everything we can and the patient is not doing well and also we need to recognize our limitations and we know what is important for the patient and that’s when the Mother Standard® comes in place.
While we want to do everything we can to help this patient to get better, if we reach a stage where options are running out and then time comes where we have to start talking to them about being comfortable and that part is a tough part because that’s when Mother Standard®, you are really pushed to challenge those standards because now we have to tell this patient that you know what, we are running out of options even though we tried everything and, but even that time we still make sure that the patient understands where we are, the family understands and I’m just facing that with one patient that I have taken care of for last about eight months that unfortunately is in that stage and to sit down with them and talk about things that they don’t want to hear but, you know, that’s where Mother Standard® helps.
You really can get involved with these patients and you get involved with the patient, the family, everybody. This is a small family by itself and that’s what I mean Mother Standard® is all about.
