Dr. Wright:
The power of the pause is the foundation for all meaningful interactions with yourself or with anyone else. That means that before you engage, you realize you are exercising your free will, and your free will empowers you to your highest and best self.

If we simply respond without consciousness, we lose our free will. So the power of the pause is what gives us the opportunity to be the most selective in our response to our situation and in this case, to be compassionate with ourselves in time of stress.
