Dr. Wright:
When a woman asks for help, it’s really important that it is direct, and simple and that you really reflect before you ask for help just exactly what it is that you want because as women we tend to be deferential and not want to be a burden. So we say, “Would you mind, would it be okay if…” No, you need to be upfront with, “Today I am having a really moody day and I need to be left alone to do my thing and I’ll get back with you later” or “I really need you to help me take care of these items.”
It is in that, that you relieve the listener from guessing, and everyone wants to be efficient in helping. They don’t want to be clumsy and they don’t want to have their time lost either, and that irritation level and stress level goes down with the more cogent and precise communication.
