Katherine Puckett, Ph.D.:
When a woman is diagnosed with cancer and maybe dealing with a shock and the fear of that diagnosis, what we do as mind-body therapists and what we try to encourage the family caregivers and friends to do as well is to be really, truly present for that person, to really be there. You may have other things on your mind. Put them aside for the moment if you can, focus and listen. Listen, listen, listen.

Don’t tell the person how to think or what to think or how to feel, but listen to how she feels, and when a woman with cancer really gets that that person is there to listen and to support and follow her lead and to honor her feelings, whatever they are, she feels safer. She feels more like opening up and talking with that person; she feels cared for and comforted and secure.
