Katherine Puckett, Ph.D.:
Deep breathing is our friend, whether or not we’re fighting cancer, but particularly when we’re fighting an illness, breathing helps us do several things.
First of all, it helps us to reconnect the mind and the body. It helps us stay more focused in the moment. Very often in life in general and then in particular for dealing with the anxiety related to going through cancer treatment, even though our body is here physically, our mind may be racing all over the place worrying about what’s going to happen tomorrow, worrying about what caused the cancer, and breathing brings the mind and the body back together, and it helps us get present. It quiets the mind, it quiets the body, and it starts the process of relaxation for the body. So it’s very, very powerful.
It has documented physical benefits. It can help quiet down the heart, it can help stimulate the immune system or boost the immune system, it can help release endorphins which could help with pain and help us feel calmer.
