Deborah Kesten:
Weight is a challenge for most of us women. As we get older, particularly 40, 45 and 50, on a few levels. One, if exercise has not been a typical part of your life, which it isn’t for most of us, how can it be when you are raising three or four children and working, and when do you do that?

When your fat-muscle ratio changes. So even if you weigh the same, there is more fat and the fat distribution is different. So you are looking different and the clothes aren’t fitting in the same way.

The second level is, if you are not exercising and eating optimally over the years, you are also more prone to gain weight and start putting pounds on because of the food you are eating, and then there’s also a hormonal element going on. The progesterone that you produce particularly, the testosterone that you produce, and the estrogen especially that you produce, is having an impact and in terms of the proportions of it changing and the percentages which change throughout your menstrual cycle, that’s why women often crave the carrot cake I was talking about before. It’s calming after a while.

And so, between hormonal changes happening throughout your 40s and 50s and also the lack of exercise and fat-muscle ratio, it’s really, really challenging to keep weight and your, this sounds like a 1950s term, your figure, the way it was when without effort when you were, let’s say 15 years old.
