Dr. Pohl:
I think I am working in this field and I have done so for 30 years because of the unique opportunity that I get when working with an addict or a family to really be with somebody in their most vulnerable time. When somebody comes for addiction treatment they are really saying, “I give up,” on some level. “I have this horrible thing going on in my life. I am out of control. I don’t know what to do about it. Can you help me?”
And I really can help people. I know enough about the disease of addiction. I know enough about the process of recovery. I happen to work with a team of people who really get how to help people and you really, God, you know, people get so well really quickly on the surface with the disease of addiction. It’s unlike many, many diseases.
Furthermore, over the course of time, the improvement is remarkable, and it’s really about life-enhancement. And I think that’s just the most joyous thing I can see is a family coming back together and really living in a productive environment that gives everybody hope for the future.
