What Is Permanent Atrial Fibrillation? - Dr. Shukla (VIDEO)

January 18, 2010 - 10:34am 209 reads 0 comments

Dr. Shukla describes permanent atrial fibrillation.

Dr. Shukla:
The next form of atrial fibrillation is referred to as permanent atrial fibrillation or longstanding atrial fibrillation. The old term was chronic atrial fibrillation. Now that’s usually subdivided, when you look in the guidelines; however, for practical purposes, permanent atrial fibrillation is atrial fibrillation that stays despite the introduction of therapeutic options.

So for example, if somebody has had an electrical cardioversion of their heart that attempted to put them from atrial fibrillation into normal rhythm and failed that, and stayed in atrial fibrillation, that would be considered a failure of that therapy to convert the patient, and the patient would be in the category of permanent atrial fibrillation.
