In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Health Minute", Dr. Connie Mariano shares a few tips about what women need to know about menopause.

I’m Dr. Connie Mariano, Chief Clinical Officer with EmpowHER, with everything you need to know about menopause.

Most women already know that hot flashes are a common symptom of menopause. But according to a new study from Australia, 35% of menopausal women also lose interest in sex, 29% experience muscle and joint pain, 26% are excessively tired, and 25% have difficulty sleeping.

While almost all women experience some symptoms from hormonal changes, aggravating factors include alcohol use, smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.

According to the National Institute of Health, hormone replacement therapy has proven to be a mixed bag.

While some women have had excellent results, the study also showed women who took estrogen with progestin had higher rates of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Women on estrogen alone also showed increased chances of endometrial cancer in those women who have not had a hysterectomy. And higher rates of stroke and blood clotting too.

Make sure you talk to your doctor before starting any kind of hormone therapy, so you understand the rewards and the risks.
