Seasons and Us

"I sit on this window sill
drawing crazy lines
watching the clouds gather
like soldiers they march
one after the other
this gray matter hung low and below
like the warm blanket
in the middle of winter
they envelope around me
my lazy yawn stretching

into yonder and beyond
should this day like night
end some time soon
giving me a ray of hope
of tomorrow's lovely blues
so I sit drawing the lines
the mist grows as I make
circles of the sun, the moon
like the rising smile on my face."

Moods : feelings, emotions, sensations, happiness, sorrow, depression, laziness-- so many of them do march like the soldiers of clouds in our minds. Our minds work like wind mills going with the moods whichever direction they take us. So we react accordingly. Moods run our lives if we let them and sometimes make or break us physically and emotionally. But wait, there are partners in crime! Mother nature works as the best friend to our minds, provoking them to dip into the mood swings and taking our body along for a ride.

Seasons : spring, summer, fall, winter--the seasons grow on us like moss on the wet earth. They are the catalysts that Mother nature adds to create our moods.
When the magnetic fields of the earth change our sleeping patterns change. This in turn affects our moods which eventually affects our minds that control our moods. We are in the hands of these seasons when it comes to our health issues.

Spring and moods : birds chirping, sun filtering through the windows washing our faces with freshness, cool breezes waking us up gently patting on our cheeks. We feel alive, energy surges through our body. We feel like we could do anything. Sunlight in spring is beautiful. It picks our spirits up and makes us happy. We don't procrastinate in doing chores. We want to become early risers, go for a jog, get better, feel better, look better. Outdoors becomes our favorite spot for recreation. All these moods make us feel healthy, happy, more friendly. Spring is for many the best time of the year. On the other side of the coin, there are those who suffer from pollen-based allergies. The can't go outdoors, hay fever is on the rise, no amount of antihistamines seem to work. We feel miserable, irritated. This in turn affects our moods and health. The best thing to do in these times is to stay indoors during early morning hours when pollen count is the highest. Use saline nasal sprays three to four times a day. Drink plenty of lemonade or orange juice to keep up with a good supply of vitamin C. Exercise, exercise and exercise and eat healthy food.

Summer : Hot, humid, sweaty--early mornings on summer days leads to mid-afternoon fatigue, tiredness takes over our mind and body resulting in irritation and crankiness. Working hours are longer and air conditioners won't do any justice to us. Plus points include more time with children, vacation time and traveling. Barbecue parties, cold beers, and swimming pools keep our moods somewhat energetic. Afternoon sun blesses us with sleepiness, time changes are what we ask for to wake up an hour late. The most irritating part of summer for me is the way I sweat and cannot go out for a walk or jog after seven in the morning or until after seven or eight in the night. Cool white cottons shirts or blouses are recommended for summer as white is the color that emanates coolness to the body and absorbs heat. Drinking plenty of water and lemonade with less sugar helps keep body temperatures down. Half an hour of nap time is good in order to make the mind fresh and moods intact.

Fall or autumn : Those falling leaves, dawns and dusks, that golden yellowish sunlight in the horizon. If you were at a park, the sounds of those running streams make us feel relaxed. We are at peace with ourselves, indulging our minds into that cool and crisp early winter breeze. In light weight jackets we feel more alive. Like bears waiting to hibernate we get ready with our body and souls for those unbearable winter nights. But then again early fall can be a killer for those who suffer from hay fever and allergies. The lucky ones enjoy just the same, the unlucky ones are at the doctor's office taking anti-allergy medications and steroids. If only they stay indoors when the pollen count is up early in the mornings they would avoid most allergies. Taking steroid injections often is not recommended for those who are looking for fast relief since they are believed to increase the chances of developing cataracts.

Winter : Fire going in the nights, cold on the outside, warm near the fireplace, those hot orange flames dancing in our eyes, with a glass of wine after dinner, looking into each others' eyes lovers are at their romantic peak. Than we open our eyes one hour early and struggle to come out of those warm and cozy sheets and we say "darn it, do I have to go to work today?" Our minds are frozen in the mornings until we charge them with that extra caffeine in the coffee. Our moods are dull and not registering until lunch time. Then we come out and it is dark! We never get to see that gorgeous sunlight. The light that brings life into our bodies and souls. Winter is the season for festivals. They start with Halloween, go through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and end up with New Years. I love to watch the lights in front of the houses and enjoy all the food. I love turkey dinners throughout the season. Most people are well satisfied with all the food including chocolate, chocolate and chocolate! Then come the complaints about weight gain followed by resolutions to lose a few pounds with strict diets and exercises for the next year. But, who could argue with the fact that most people are happy with their spirits lifted up with the holidays and gift giving. Shorter days do not bother us especially in December because even at work mostly it is more play and less work. With a little bit of watching out for what we eat, winter is not so bad folks! So, enjoy your winters.

Seasons and moods go hand in hand most of our lives. Our minds dictate our moods and our seasons dictate our minds. At the end, our bodies take the hit-- good or bad depending on how our minds lead our spirits with our moods. Making the most out of our time regardless of seasons through exercise and proper foods will give us better moods, bodies and minds and enjoy life. It's all about maintaining balance because, OUR LIFE MATTERS.
