Dr. Aklog describes the causes of mitral valve prolapse/MVP.
We don’t really know what causes mitral valve prolapse. There’s no specific cause that’s been identified. It just appears that some group of patients just have a tendency to develop this abnormality and develop these heart sounds that can predict the development ultimately in some small fraction of patients of an abnormal function.
There’s probably something within the tissue of the valve that’s slightly abnormal that causes it, but that has yet to be identified.
