DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A woman being taken from a hospital's emergency room to intensive care was trapped in an elevator for about three hours and later died.

The cause of Tamela Sims' death was not immediately released, and it was unclear whether being stuck in the elevator early Sunday contributed to her death at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, about 30 miles north of Des Moines.

Sims’ mother says her daughter weighed more than 500 pounds and was claustrophobic.

The hospital spokeswoman says there was medical help and equipment in the stuck elevator, and that doctors were available through an elevator telephone and a ceiling outlet.
