Could Eating Blueberries Reduce Belly Fat?

April 28, 2009 - 11:22am 1450 reads 1 comments

A new study conducted by the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center suggests eating blueberries could indeed reduce belly fat and limit the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

“The benefits of eating fruits and vegetables has been well-researched, but our findings in regard to blueberries shows the naturally occurring chemicals they contain, such as anthocyanins, show promise in mitigating these health conditions,” according to Steven Bolling, M.D., a U-M heart surgeon and head of the Cardioprotection Laboratory.

Belly fat releases hormones and chemicals, such as cortisol and leptin, into the body which can damage the heart and brain. Taking steps to reduce belly fat is an important step in maintaining a healthy heart and body.

So, go ahead and add some blueberries to your morning cereal or you salad at lunch. It is a tasty way to do something good for yourself.

Eliz,

Thank you so much for this post! I love blueberries and eat them probably 5 out of 6 mornings. Every time I turn around, it seems like there is yet another story or study about good things blueberries do for us. They are antioxidants, they help in the symptoms of aging, they are good for the heart and they apparently can even improve eyesight. And no, I'm not on the blueberry board, LOL. I'm just a huge fan.

Here are a few links to articles and studies about the effects blueberries can have:
