Autoimmune Conditions and Childhood Trauma Can be Healed With a Mind/Body Approach to Treatment
Autoimmune diseases are far more prevalent in women than in men. Examples of autoimmune diseases are multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, pernicious anemia, Addison's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome , lupus erythematosus, Graves' disease and celiac disease.
An autoimmune disease is a condition that occurs when our own immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. It is a mystery of medicine to understand why the body creates autoimmune conditions in the body. Earlier this year, there was a CDC study covering 15,000 HMO members in a San Diego Cohort for a two-year period of time that noted that the risk of adults contracting an autoimmune disease increased from 70 percent to 100 percent if the child was abused or grew up in adverse home conditions. The findings are simple: trauma in childhood actually creates inflammation and autoimmunity in adulthood.
I find this study interesting because it shows the connection between the mind and body in health and illness. It shows how stressful conditions can impact the body in a strongly negative way.
