Christine Jeffries is About to Lose It

July 15, 2009 - 12:40pm 565 reads 0 comments

It’s been too long since I’ve written for EmpowHer. Self-consciousness clouds my head and there is a lot going on. Excuses, excuses…so here’s a quick one to break the writer’s block. I found a website today, thanks to a good friend: www.sparkpeople.com

It is a healthy lifestyle website not unlike EmpowHer. It is designed to make you track your progress on eating right, working out, and connects you with like-minded individuals, suggested eating plans, etc. I can support all those things. I've heard that tracking helps weight loss plans be more successful. I’m excited about this site not only because it’s FREE, but because I’m hoping against hope that along with my good friend (using the buddy system also helps), we finally will lose the last of our baby weight and marriage weight. Can you still call it baby weight when it's been more than a year?

Weight loss is a struggle for me, as it is for many. I’m 5’1” on a good day, and 120 lb. That may not sound like much to a lot of people, but this is the most I’ve weighed not being pregnant. My taller friends laugh at me, saying I’m within healthy range, and should know their weight troubles. I contend that being shorter, and being chesty doesn’t help either, it is harder to lose weight. Especially since, as mentioned in my bio, I have a love/hate relationship with my daily workouts. I also am a carb junkie.

I can blame my seriously-pushing-40 age. I can blame my thyroid (the test came back negative). I can blame my kids because they don’t allow me to sit and eat a healthy meal. But when it comes down to it, I’m responsible for my well-being and I’ve got to take control of this thing before it gets more out of hand.

So I’m making a pact with myself and my friend. I will track what I eat and I will track my workouts to try and see where I’m going wrong. I will not post that I ate a bag of Doritos or a bucket of ice cream, because I won’t do it.

I will post that I ran 2 miles today, and I’m going to yoga tomorrow morning (my friend is meeting me so I won’t blow it off). I will eat 2 fruits and 2 veggies today. I’ll let you know if I reach my goals.

We value and respect the experiences of all of our HERWriters, but everyone is different. Many of our writers are speaking from personal experience, and what's worked for them may not work for you. Their articles are not a substitute for medical advice although we hope you can gain knowledge from their insight.
