This is so timely as many people I know are heading back to school in addition to working so burnout seems inevitable. Found a great chart on stress vs. burnout if you'd like to take a look.

Stress: Characterized by overengagement
Burnout: Characterized by disengagement

Stress: Emotions are overreactive
Burnout: Emotions are blunted

Stress: Produces urgency and hyperactivity
Burnout: Produces helplessness and hopelessness

Stress: Loss of energy
Burnout: Loss of motivation, ideals, and hope

Stress: Leads to anxiety disorders
Burnout: Leads to detachment and depression

Stress: Primary damage is physical
Burnout: Primary damage is emotional

Stress: May kill you prematurely
Burnout: May make life seem not worth living

My poor darling groom can hardly tell the difference between feeling stressed and feeling burned out, so he constantly says he's burned out - while I know he's exhausted from stressing out (he's highly strung). The good thing is that he has made conscious decisions to delay travel plans a day so that he can get some extra rest.

I think I stress out more than burn out, although I think the burnout results from reacting to the stressing out.

Time for a vacation!

Yes, I agree that burnt out is the result of overdo stress. Sounds like a smart decision to delay for one day. It is sad that we have to have something drastic happen in order to change our ways, but for most of us, that is how it works.
