Getting a regular mammogram

More women are getting mammograms. A 1992 survey found that the number of women who obtained a mammogram in the preceding year doubled between 1987 and 1990, from 17 to 33 percent. However, many women are not having mammograms and breast examinations at regular intervals. Sadly, those least likely to have regular exams include those at highest risk, women aged 60 and older.

The reason women most frequently give for having-or not having-a mammogram is whether or not the doctor suggested it. Although surveys show that more physicians are routinely advising mammography, some physicians fail to do so-some because they forget, some because they assume that another doctor has done so. If your doctor doesn't suggest mammography, it will be up to you to raise the issue.
