Paula explains if she recommends women have the BRCA1 genetic test to determine if they are at an increased risk for ovarian cancer.

Paula:
If you have a family history, an Ashkenazi Jew, that doesn’t necessarily have to be because I have met people who have the genetic mutation who are not Jewish, but it’s a red flag, I think. I mean, I have spoken to people who have had multiple family history and not done the genetic testing.

Now, I spoke to, and you saw that article about the Spanish Jews in New Mexico, and that was really scary. And what bothered me about that article was, was that they had found that out in 2001. This article was just printed in 2008. You know, here is the time lapse there? You know, I am not saying that people weren’t being treated, but the information was not getting out, and that’s the most important part of all this. Women need this information. Doctors need this information because they are doing nothing with it unless they are a gynecologist-oncologist.
