Vulvodynia: Intensely Painful Sexual Dysfunction

Dr. Irwin Goldstein has researched sexual dysfunction for over thirty years.

He and Dr. Andrew Goldstein wrote a book titled "Female Sexual Pain Disorders". Later the television program 20/20 interviewed Dr. Andrew Goldstein about the book.

He was subsequently inundated with thousands of phone calls from women who had been living with an agonizing condition called vulvodynia.

Vulvodynia is a form of sexual dysfunction that is intensely painful, in the area of the vaginal opening. This condition has previously been given little attention and the women suffering from it have had little or no recourse in treating the pain.

Dr. Irwin Goldstein is hopeful that this new public awareness may be the beginning of a new trend and that some means of relief will be found.

"Dr. Irwin Goldstein is Director of San Diego Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital, the Secretary of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health, a former President of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and a Clinical Professor of Surgery at University of California at San Diego."

Dyspareunia is the technical term for recurrent and persistent genital pain in a man or woman before, during, or after sexual intercourse. They may experience the pain as repeated, intense discomfort; momentary sharp sensations of varying intensity; or intermittent twinges and/or aching sensations. Dyspareunia in men, who may experience the pain in the testes and/or the glans after ejaculation, appears to be much less common than painful intercourse in women.

By the way--the national vulvodynia association has been around for years and is a leading education and advocacy group on this topic. They got the conversation and awareness started on this topic....
