Recent research has found that just because infants aren’t talking back to us, doesn’t mean they aren’t understanding what we’re saying.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania analyzed 33 babies between 6 and 9 months and found babies can understand many words sooner than they can actually say them.
Most psychologists don't think word comprehension is possible until a child is closer to 1 year, but these researchers found 6- to 9-month olds learn the meaning of the words for certain foods and body parts through their daily exposure to language.
Babies were shown a screen with a picture of a food and a body part while their parents asked them to find the apple, for instance. An eye-tracking device revealed the babies' responses to the phrases and babies looked more often at the picture that was named than any other images.
Just because your infant isn’t talking back to you, doesn’t mean they’re not understanding what you say. The more your baby knows, the more they can build on what they know, even as young as 6 months.
