moms, here are 3 ways to document a great summer Huntstock/Thinkstock

Summer has officially started. Moms everywhere are already thinking about how their children will answer the question, "What did you do during summer break?" when they go back to school.

Perhaps big family trips are planned, or maybe a few weeks of summer camp. Maybe it will be a summer full of playdates, time spent with grandparents or long days at the pool or beach.

Whatever moms have planned for their kids this summer, it will not matter if they do not remember it. So with that in mind, here are three simple, inexpensive ways to document this summer and preserve these special moments for the kids (and moms too)!

1. Journal
With all that goes on in the daily life of a mom, it is no wonder moms forget many of the cute, funny, or otherwise memorable things their kids do or say each day.

Having a journal around where moms spend most of their time, maybe in the kitchen or stuffed in the diaper bag, it will have a better chance of being used. For most Moms, long gone are the days when a journal on the bedside table would be used consistently.

And journals do not have to be expensive. The photo gift-making site, Paper Coterie, is offering new customers one of their deluxe, customizable journals for FREE just for signing up. (Just use the promo code welcomejournal when checking out.)

2. Take photos
It is no wonder that people say a picture is worth a thousand words. While writing down a memory can be a little difficult at times, taking a photo is very easy. Whether it is with a fancy camera with all the bells and whistles or just the standard camera that comes with most phones, just taking the picture is what is most important.

3. Do something together
Even writing down everything and taking lots of pictures, kids can still have foggy memories of lots of things. But when they physically do something with their family, those memories tend to stay with them longer.

Get out and build a tree house, make some jewelry, or use some of today's technology to make a family movie.

Mom to seven, blogger Kat Robertson had a family water fight that is sure to be remembered. She also documented it on her blog and took lots of photos.

Picking a project that the whole family can do together is sure to make it into the "what I did on my summer vacation" report.

The bottom line is that parents only get about 18 summers with their children. Use them wisely and document them well.
