November 11 is Veterans Day which honors the men and women who are serving and who have served in the United States armed services. Veterans Day also serves as a day to remember all those who have given their lives for our country.

Veterans Day evolved from the day the Armistice was signed in 1918 which ended World War I. Great Britain and France also commemorate this day but it is called Armistice Day and Canada calls it Remembrance Day.

As a special thank you to our armed forces, many businesses across the U.S. are offering special discounts to our military and their families on Veterans Day. Please note that you must present your military identification to qualify for these discounts.

• On Veterans Day, Krispy Kreme is giving away free doughnuts to all veterans and active military personnel. Veterans and active military are entitled to a free doughnut of any variety.
• Abuelo's Mexican Food Restaurant’s Veterans Day deals vary by region, so check with your local restaurant before heading out. One example is a buy-one-get-one-free entree deal for all veterans and active military.
• On the 11th, Applebee's across the U.S. will offer a free entrée (from a choice of six entrées) for military veterans and active-duty service members.
• On November 15 the Golden Corral will offer a special Military Appreciation Dinner. The free meal is available to veterans, retired and those currently serving in the National Guard or Reserves
• Outback Steakhouse is offering a free Bloomin’ Onion and non-alcoholic beverage to veterans on November 11.
• Some Subway restaurants are distributing free six-inch subs to veterans or active-duty members on Veterans Day. Call ahead because not all franchises are participating in this event.
• November 1-November 25th, Knott’s Berry Farm is offering free admission for past and present military members during its annual Military Tribute. The promotion is available Veterans and current military personnel plus one guest gets in free with proper ID presented at Knott’s turnstile. Also, the promotion allows military to purchase up to six additional tickets for just $15.
• Also on November 11th, 2010, the National Parks Service is waiving all entrance fees at all national parks.
• This week, Brides Across America is giving away wedding gowns to qualified military brides. The link displays participating stores. Each participating store has a number of gowns which are samples or overstock and worth between $500 and $3000. Dress sizes from 4 to 22 and are given away on a first-come-first-served basis.
