Dr. Garrett Lam recalls a memorable success story about a woman who was treated at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona for preeclampsia.
Dr. Lam:
Well as an example of what we do with severely preeclamptic women, we have a mother here who was transferred to us from a very small community up north here in Arizona. She lived in a very rural area with very limited access to medical care. Her doctors up there as general obstetricians were able to recognize it. She had preeclampsia that was brewing and because of the fact that they did not have the proper facilities there to care for her or for a possible premature infant they transferred her down here to our maternal-fetal center here at Banner Good Samaritan.
With careful observation everyday and checking her blood pressures, checking her labs, and under the watchful eyes of our staff, our nurses and our docs, we’ve been able to extend her pregnancy for another month, which will greatly benefit this baby’s chance for a long-term survival.
In fact, we’re planning on delivering her within the next week. The baby will still be about three weeks premature, however we feel that it is medically indicated because the risk of late prematurity for the baby is more than made up for by averting any further risk to maternal health and subsequently to baby’s health if mom gets any sicker.
