Are There Any Current Clinical Trials Related To Pregnancy? - Dr. Dugoua (VIDEO)

Dr. Dugoua:

Doing research on pregnant women is very challenging because for ethical reasons we have to worry about the impact to the woman, and also we have to worry about the impact to the fetus, and we have to worry about the impact of the child later on in life in terms of what our intervention will do. So there’s really three facets.

So to do a research study on a pregnant population, we have to make sure what we’re giving is very safe and we’re very comfortable with how we’re administering this to the pregnant woman. There are some studies going on; unfortunately on the natural health side and on the drug side, we don’t see a lot of people studying these interventions in pregnant women.

What we see more often are cases that we have collected over time of people that incidentally took these things, and we pooled those cases together and we compare them against a control group; it’s called the cohort study. And then we see an improvement or we see something went wrong. Those are the type of studies we are doing more, just for ethical reasons.
