Birth Control, What Options Do New Mothers Have? - Dr. Schallock (VIDEO)

Dr. Schallock:

The birth control options after you deliver depend upon whether or not you are breastfeeding or not breast feeding. For breastfeeding moms there is the progesterone-only birth control pill such as the Nor-QD or the Micronor as well as there’s also the Depo-Provera injection, which is a progesterone-only and it’s an injection that lasts for three months, and sometimes it does a little bit of a weight gain associated with it.

Other options for breastfeeding moms are condoms, vaginal contraception film, diaphragm, IUD, and there’s two types of IUD – the ParaGard and the Mirena.

If you are not breastfeeding you can also use those same options that the breastfeeding moms have, but in addition to it you can also use products that have estrogen in them such as estrogen-containing birth control pills.

She received her undergraduate degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and graduated from medical school at Medical College of Wisconsin.
