Fitness instructor Scott Keppel shares if a woman can exercise while she is pregnant and if so, at what fitness level.

Fitness Instructor Scott Keppel:
Being pre- and post-natal certified, I have trained over 20 women to term and the answer to "Can you continue to exercise?" As long as your doctor says yes, you don’t have any complications for whatever reason, then yes, you can continue to exercise, slowing down the level that you once started.

So, if you were not exercising on a regular basis prior to pregnancy, if you weren't running prior to being pregnant, don’t start now. But if you are running marathons, if you’re lifting six days a week, yeah, you’re going to have to scale that back a little and maybe go down and jog slower and keeping your heart rate anywhere from 60 to 70%, and when you’re lifting, not worrying about shaping the muscles because you have to put on weight for yourself and for the baby.

So what I recommend individuals, for women to do, is to train at a little higher rep range, because those tendons, those ligaments, the connective tissue, are stretching to allow for that pregnancy to occur. So don’t try and break any records lifting heavy. I would keep the reps between the 8-12 rep range. That way, you’re trying to maintain as much muscle as you can throughout the pregnancy, so afterwards you’re more apt to lose that pregnancy weight and get back in the swing of things.
