Folate: An Important Nutrient for Pregnant Women

Women who are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant should give some thought to the increased nutritional needs that come along with pregnancy. A young lady named Eunice has babies on the brain.

"Where am I going with all this baby talk? Well, in my Preventive Nutrition class this semester, one of our assignments was to create a patient education handout on the topic of our choice. I chose folate, because I believe it isn’t talked about enough in the population who needs it the most: women of child-bearing age. Yep, that includes me and my delirious baby fever."

Folate is a biggy in the nutritional arena, especially for pregnant women. Folate is the natural form found in the foods we eat. Folic acid is manufactured for vitamins and food that have been fortified. Folate deficiency is considered to be a cause of birth defects in babies.
