Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists: What Should Women Know? - Dr. Mills

Rate This

Dr. Marlin Mills describes the role of a maternal-fetal medicine specialist. Dr. Mills is on staff at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona.

Dr. Mills:
Maternal-fetal medicine specialists do have a different background educationally. They do come out of the obstetric/gynecology residency programs, but then spend an additional two to three years as a maternal-fetal medicine specialist focusing on primarily those medical conditions and surgical conditions that affect mothers and babies prior to delivery and then the neonatologist would take care of babies after delivery.

But it is that extra two to three years that maternal-fetal specialists gear towards research, understanding the role and methods in research and how it applies to this field particularly and most maternal-fetal medicine specialists spend their days doing just maternal-fetal medicine and not gynecology, not some other forms of women’s healthcare.
