Probiotics And Pregnancy: A Healthy Combination

As a naturopathic physician, Dr. Donielle Wilson strongly suggests that you take probiotics such as acidophilis when you're trying to get pregnant. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that will enhance the efficiency of your digestive tract, maintain a healthy hormone balance, and leave you less vulnerable to infection.

Probiotics will also do good things for your unborn baby. Your baby will be less likely to have allergies, asthma or eczema if you take probiotics during pregnancy.

Dr. Wilson:
I recommend acidophilus, also known as a probiotic. There are different names and the terminology is used in different ways. It is basically a product that you’re taking by mouth that introduces healthy bacteria to your digestive tract, and it’s really important to have healthy bacteria in the digestive tract for several reasons.

One, is that it actually has to do with hormone balance. Then when you have healthy bacteria in your digestive tract, you’re much more likely to have healthy hormone balance in your body.

The other reason is that it’s going to minimize infections, including vaginal infections. So again, when you have healthy balance of bacteria in the digestive tract you’re much less likely to get sick or an infection anywhere else in your body.

The last reason is that women who take acidophilus before and during pregnancy, it’s been shown that their children, their babies have much lower levels of allergies, and so it’s a way to lower the likelihood of allergies and asthma and eczema in your newborn.
