Ten-Year-Old Girl Gives Birth in Spain - An Editorial

As incredible as it may seem, a 10-year-old girl gave birth to a baby in Spain, and Spanish authorities said that they had never before encountered such a young mother.

The baby was born to the girl in the southern city of Jerez on October 26, 2010. The doctors involved said that the girl and her mother, who accompanied her to the hospital, appeared very calm. The baby weighed 6.4 pounds, and the father was reported to be under-age.

Micaela Navarro, the head of the health services in the region of Andalucia where Jerez is located, said that the important thing is for the mother and baby to receive the proper care.

A local newspaper, the Diario de Sevilla, reported that a caesarean was not performed on the girl.

Doctors warned that pregnancies of this kind have health risks for young girls. “At a young age your bones are not even fully formed. The high level of hormonal activity caused by a pregnancy can provoke problems,” said Dr. Adolfo Lopez Gomez of Seville’s Sagrado Corazon (Sacred Heart) hospital.

In 2008 Andalucia had 177 children born to girls under the age of 14. The case of a ten-year-old giving birth is unheard of.

Another local newspaper, the Diario de Jerez, reported that the doctors involved in this extraordinary case of the young mother said that the baby had been welcomed into the new family, who in turn said that childbirth at a very young age was not uncommon in their native Romania.

Spain will allow marriage at 14 years old, if the judge decides that the circumstances are exceptional.

Frankly, I am pretty surprised that a 10-year-old could actually give birth, and I am appalled by the fact that a such a girl and her underage mate were having sex in the first place. In spite of what the girl’s family may have said about girls having babies at a young age in Romania, it is just unacceptable and rather abhorrent for children to be having sex. Where were the families when this was going on? What kind of care and education were these children receiving? No girl should be a mother at 10. And no culture on earth should be nonchalant and dismissive about children giving birth.

You are welcome Pat.
I want to thank you for the compassion you showed with the 11-year-old American girl.

Anna - I personally worked with an 11-year-old American girl who became pregnant after being raped by her mother's boyfriend. It was a tragic situation all the way around, including the removal of the baby due to abuse from her child mother. Thanks for bringing this story to our attention.

Hi Anna

Thanks for this post. I remember this story. It's actually not totally uncommon for Roma to have babies at a very young age, including the Roma (it's important to clarify that it's Roma, not "Romanians") who have migrated to places like Spain, France and Ireland. I've encountered young Roma girls in all these countries with babies and it's impossible to know if they are siblings or parent-child combos. Countries and cultures do not condone this "custom" but the Roma do. The Romanians are used to it and pretty much shrug off the news and move on. 14 year olds getting married in Spain are rare and the children involved are rarely, if ever, Spanish.

I think the youngest mother on record was 5 years old, coming from Peru. That was back in the 20s, I think.

There was also that famous case in Brazil recently of a 9 year old pregnant girl who was shunned by the Catholic Church for having an abortion (the pedophillic rapist who got her that way was forgiven and accepted back because he said he was sorry - I can't talk about it because I'll throw my laptop out the window if I do!) .

Although it's probably not an everyday occurrence (we hope!), children having children happens all over the world, especially second and third worlds (not that it can't happen anywhere). 13 and 14 year old's get pregnant in America all the time. For the really young pregnant girls, it's often deemed "cultural" or "religious" or all sorts of other things along these lines.

Hi Susan,
The source I used for the article stated Romanian and not Roma, and I did not want to be presume otherwise, although I did suspect that it could have been Roma.
Yes, children having children does happen all over the world. Nevertheless, I find it abhorrent.
I wrote an article for this website about the nine year old Brazilian girl who had an abortion.
Thanks for your comments.
