The highly popular diet pill called Hydroxycut has been pulled from shelves, amidst fears that it causes liver damage and other serious risks that can result in death.
The FDA have been notified of nearly two dozen reports of extremely serious damage done by these diet pills, including necessitating one person to require a liver transplant.
Other reports are of heart and kidney damage.
Nine million bottles of Hydroxycut products were sold last year alone, making it a highly successful seller for the company that makes it - Iovate Health Sciences, based in Canada. The company has voluntarily removed 14 kinds of diet or supplemental products from shelves, but two remain - Hoodia and Hydroxicut Cleanse. The ingredients in these two products are not thought to cause the kind of damage reported to the FDA.
The products are sold in many outlets in the United States, including Vitamin Shoppe and GNC.
