Here’s a woman who asks, “My niece who is in college is almost 21. She has a long time boyfriend and they are sexually active. My question is why am I uncomfortable when they stay together in our home?”
Dr. Marty Klein:
Boy, that’s not the direction I thought that question was going to go. Why are you uncomfortable, well it could be a number of things - if you have known this girl since she is 3-years-old the idea that she is a grown up maybe kind of just concerning and if the two of them are walking around half undressed, if they have that sort of goony look that people have when they just had sex five minutes ago, well that would make almost anybody feel left out, may be even a little envious.
And of course where they are in their bedroom in your home and having sex the question is are they making a lot of noise, do you feel like you are the one who has to tip toe around them? So I understand why you would be uncomfortable. Perhaps you are not comfortable with the way that she is dressing because it’s a little too sexy for you.
I think that when people come to visit you and your home you are pretty much the one who makes the rules, right? When you visit them in their home they are the ones who make the rules. But in general, when it’s also uncomfortable with young people’s sexuality it’s generally because A, they have known the young adults since they were children and so the idea that they are sexual is kind of mind-boggling.
And the other reason is because ‘Hey, I feel left out. I used to be young and I was sexual just like you and now I am middle-age and I am not so sexual as you are and I just kind of feel left out’.
