Sexually active adults over the age of 50 are far less likely than their younger counterparts to use condoms. The risk of pregnancy is pretty much a thing of the past but STDs are available at any age.
The number of people over the age of 50 with STD infections has risen considerably in recent years. Interestingly, many of those experiencing higher rates of STD infection are men using drugs for erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Anupam Jena of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston led the study. He makes a few observations.
"While the reasons for this development aren't well understood, he said more divorces and better health might have conspired to boost sexual prowess and activity among graying heads.
"The problem, however, is that older adults appear to flaunt safe sex practices."
The younger age groups still have much higher rates of STDs than the older groups. The older adults however are proving to be just as much in need of protection as the younger crowd.
