Yesterday my mom sent me an article titled "Are You the Tortoise or the Hare?
Why too Much Hurry Hurts." The article talks about how in our society we have become "destination addicts". I thought the idea of destination addicts is such an appropriate term for so many of us. We have become so overwhelmed by checking things off our to do list that we don’t take time to enjoy our daily lives. Destination addicts always think they should have accomplished more for their age. Or they should be farther along in their careers or financials. Destination addicts are never happy with where they are in their lives. They are very critical of themselves.
I know that I have found myself being a destination addict at different points in my own life. When I think about it, it can be very detrimental to creating happiness and contentment in my life. It is a way of tearing down at my esteem. I have found myself really disappointed in myself for not reaching some milestone that might have been unattainable in the first place. This actually causes stress mental and physical stress in the body. It is a way that we create stress in ourselves. Stress is a risk factor in may chronic disease like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes or cancer.
Instead of being a destination addict--always reaching for one more thing that is out of my reach--I have started to focus on each accomplishment that I have reached each day. About 18 months ago I started a daily process that has helped me feel good about all the accomplishments I do complete each day. At the end of each day I spend five minutes writing down all my accomplishments for the day. It helps me realize all the personal, professional, financial activities that I have made progress or completed. This is a way of creating better esteem for myself and it reduces my stress. Instead of feeling bad about what I have not done I can be proud of what I have done.
