What are the dangers of having an IUD in for longer than the 5 years it was made for?

Due to my lack of employment and subsequent health insurance I have been unable to afford to have my IUD removed let alone replaced with a new one. I am 46 years old. As of yet I have not experienced any outward signs of problems but am I basically living with a ticking time bomb inside me?
