Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows the struggle it is to stay motivated and stick to the plan. When you add slow results, it is even harder. This is one of the biggest reasons people choose to try a fad diet or some magic pill or liquid; the promise of fast results. Unfortunately, there is no real magic pill or liquid and fad diets are just not healthy for you. If you are one of the lucky people who manage to drop some serious weight quickly, you can be sure it is all going to come back the minute you stop the plan. The best and safest way to lose weight is by changing the way you eat; not just for the length of your diet plan or pills. Staying motivated will be hard, but it can be done.
Getting off to a Good Start
The first week or two of your weight loss plan should not be too hard to stay motivated. This is the time when you will lose the most weight naturally. Instead of jumping in to some very low calorie or other restrictive regime, take things a bit slower. Try eliminating some of your snacks or changing them to a fruit or vegetable. Keep healthy treats around that are a part of whichever diet you plan on following. The idea is to not have such a dramatic beginning that when things level off you do not get so discouraged.
Adjust your Diet over Time
As you notice the weight loss slowing down, adjust your diet accordingly. Think about it, if you start off at 200 pounds and immediately cut back to 1200 calories a day, you are going to shed some serious weight. As you lose the weight, your body will not need as many calories so the 1200 calories a day will not give you the same results. Lower you food intake gradually and you will see a more steady loss over time. No, it will not be 10 pounds in a week, but seriously, that would not last anyway.
Exercise
While there are diet plans and supplements that promise you will lose weight without exercising, it is not going to happen consistently; especially if you have already cut back on your intake drastically. The need for exercise when you are trying to lose weight is two-fold. First, it increases the amount of food you actually need to keep your body functioning. This means you can eat more and still lose some pounds. It is a simple math; you need a certain amount of food to stay at your given weight. If you eat less than that, you will lose. If you exercise, you need more food to maintain your weight. Exercise and eat less and you will lose more, faster. The second reason to exercise is it makes you feel good. Okay, you might ache the first week, but emotionally and mentally you will feel better. You will be more apt to stick to your plan and the pounds will come off consistently.
Losing weight at lightning speed is a sure way to cause motivation problems. You are not going to be able to maintain such drastic change for a long period of time. It is much better to shoot for realistic goals that have you losing a nice amount consistently.
