Today is the first day of spring!
To celebrate, the experts at the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) suggest that spring cleaning rituals include keeping your oral hygiene in top shape.
Here are a few things the AACD suggest:
- Use an Electric Toothbrush. They said, "Electric toothbrushes work harder by pushing fluid between teeth and around the gum line, which provides a more effective cleaning."
- Floss at Night. 65 million Americans have gum disease (that's one out of every two adults)"flossing once a day is crucial to avoid plaque and tartar, a hard mineral deposit that can cause gums to become swollen and inflamed, leading to gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease."
- Select the right toothpaste. Be cautious of any toothpaste that claims to whiten your teeth. "The reality is that removal of surface stains by a toothpaste will make the tooth 'look' lighter, but not change its inherent color."
- Don't forget the mouthwash.
- Eat foods good for healthy teeth. Try fruits like strawberries and pineapple (high in fiber), kale and broccoli (prevent enamel erosion), onions and wasabi (reduce oral bacteria), quinoa (contains many minerals).
This is just some of the great tips that the AACD highlights in the "Recipes for a Healthier Smile" e-booklet.
