Greek philosopher Heraclitus suggested that the only thing that remains the same is change. When it comes to aging, adapting to change can be extremely difficult for women because studies have shown that women, unlike men, are ascribed value based on their appearance more than anything else.
Behavioral science expert Juliana Breines, Ph.D. explains how this unwritten societal rule can affect a woman’s self-esteem via this statement: "Objectifying images and messages are widespread in American society, and they communicate not only that women's value lies in their appearance, but they also present an ideal of attractiveness that is unattainable for most women.
These unrealistic standards can lead to feelings of body shame and disgust, and to unhealthy eating and exercise behaviors." This article will help show mature women how to continue to age gracefully by tweaking their makeup routine.
WHAT CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE AND WHY?
According to various makeup artists, women who are fans of cream-based foundation should switch to a liquid foundation because “heavier” formulas tend to accentuate dry patches, frown lines and wrinkles that tend to form with time. When it comes to applying foundation, makeup specialist Frances Hathaway offers the following advice: "Only use foundation where you need it to even out discoloration." Other beauty experts have suggested that women can add years to their appearance by wearing mascara on their lower lashes because it can draw attention to under eye circles. Additionally, dark-hued lipstick can make mouths look smaller and less youthful.

Supermodel and actress Lauren Hutton created her eponymous makeup line after she re-entered the modeling world at a time when most of her colleagues had retired. Ms. Hutton discusses the inspiration behind her cosmetic line via the following statement: “When I returned to modeling at 46, I began researching and even mixing and blending my own products to enhance my features instead of masking them - with lightweight, sheer, shimmer - free formulas.” Ms. Hutton has also created how-to videos to help mature women properly apply makeup.
MORE THAN MAKEUP
According to a study conducted by representatives of chewing gum brand Orbit Complete, good oral hygiene trumps expertly applied makeup. Data from this trial revealed that most people find a smiling woman to be more “youthful” and more attractive than a non-smiling woman wearing makeup. You might have had perfect pearly whites in your youth and even into your thirties or forties, but years of eating and drinking will leave your teeth dull, stained, and possibly yellowing. Some people think that once they reach their fifties or sixties, they don't need to got to the dentist for regular cleanings, but the opposite is true—this time is essential for dental care because as you age, oral issues can escalate much more quickly.
As you age, you might dread making changes and switching up your routine. The truth is that finding a new look can be exciting, and even though you aren't ecstatic about getting older, you can be excited about the next chapter of your life. Your body and lifestyle will be changing, therefore, it only makes sense that your beauty and health routines change as well. The good news is that you can still be fabulous at 50, and beyond!
