The Circuelle Foundation compiled and released independent research results from leading academic institutions uncovering the importance of breast self-exams (BSE). The historical events and opinions surrounding the need for breast self-exams is contradictory and can be confusing at best, but there is proof today for keeping this healthy ritual.
“Women are confused and in many cases mislead about the significance of breast self-exams and becoming breast aware,” explains Melissa Kirkpatrick, founder of The Circuelle Foundation. “It’s time we educate ourselves and our loved ones about proactive breast-awareness healthy rituals that promote early detection; the best deterrent to breast cancer mortality.”
Despite the amount of confusing information surrounding breast self-examination and mammogram screening, reassuring data from highly reputable academic research reveals not only the benefits of, but also the importance of BSE:
(1) 46% of breast cancers diagnosed were first found during a breast self-examination (Duke University)
(2) 71% of breast cancers detected in younger women (< 40 years old) were first detected by breast self examination (Harvard University)
(3) In a study of 782 women under the age of 50, the Mayo Clinic found that these women were more likely to find a lump from breast self-examination than those detected through mammogram screening
