In vitro fertilization (IVF) one of the commonly used infertility treatments is known to be most effective type of an assisted reproductive technology (ART) to help women become pregnant. The IVF treatment includes fertilizing of an egg outside the woman’s body, in a laboratory, and then placing it in a woman's uterus.Today, everyone knows about this procedure very well as it has proven to be one of the successful infertility treatments. IVF is usually the last step in the treatment of infertility as it is kept for cases in which methods like surgery, artificial insemination and fertility drugs didn’t work.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Procedure
The typical IVF procedure begins with scheduled medication designed to control ovulation process. Commonly performed method is to take 5 days of nasally administered Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRH) to close the ovaries, followed by 10 days of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) injections designed to shoot the construction of multiple eggs. Blood tests and ultrasound examinations help decide the best time to take out the eggs from follicles present inside the ovaries, which is surgically done about 36 hours after a human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection is given. The eggs are later mixed with sperm gathered from the patient’s partner on same day. This mixture is further incubated in a glass dish for 2-5 days in a laboratory. In these 2-5 days of time fertilized eggs are developed and out of these eggs few of the selected eggs are implanted in the patient’s uterus using a catheter and the patient remains in bed for the next few hours. Usually multiple eggs are inserted inside the uterus to increase the chance of pregnancy, although this may even intensify the chances of multiple births. If the couple agrees then remaining embryos may be frozen for future attempts.
To summarize the above procedure, IVF is done in 5 steps:
1. Stimulation process is referred to as super ovulation.
2. Egg recovery
3. Pollination and Fertilization
4. Embryo selection
5. Embryo transfer
Few Risks Associated With IVF Procedure
Many patients may have headaches, bloating, mood swings, abdominal pain, and other side effects. Repeated injections can even cause bruising.Reactions to anesthesia can cause problems like infection, bleeding, and damage to structures nearby the ovaries, including the bowel and bladder.
