American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Touts Uterine Fibroid Embolization As Safe and Effective

The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) recently published an article that touted Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) as a safe, durable and effective treatment for uterine fibroid tumors and highly recomended that doctors present UFE to women facing surgeries such as hysterectomy and myomectomy. In fact, 91% of the women studied said they would recommend UFE to a friend!

Dr. Linda D. Bradley reviewed multiple studies and clinical trials that included thousands of women over a period of 18 months to 7 years. The studies identified post-procedure results, short- and mid-term outcomes, long-term outcomes, side effects and fertility after UFE. The clinical trials compared UFE to Hysterectomy and/or Myomectomy measuring length of hospital stay, improvement in pain, efficacy of reproduction, quality of life and cost effectiveness. The positive results for UFE were impressive:

* UFE presented less risk with few complications
* UFE recovery time was much faster
* UFE was typically the most cost effective procedure
* UFE experienced the highest patient satisfaction rate (91% said they would recommend it to a friend)
* UFE displayed a high success rate, up to 94%

Dr. Bradley, the author of the article, concluded that UFE is a safe, effective and durable alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy. She emphasized the importance of collaborative and comprehensive care (from diagnosis to follow-up) in the success of UFE and stressed the importance of involving an experienced physician for proper diagnosis.
