VIDEO: Amelia Barcenas – Bariatric Patients, What Inspires You To Help Them?

Patient coordinator Amelia Barcenas shares how long she has been the coordinator for bariatric surgeon Dr. Shyam Dahiya and what inspires her to work with obese patients.

Amelia:
I have been working with Dr. Dahiya for almost nine years now, and let me tell you, I think I am the luckiest coordinator that any program should have. I have a very talented surgeon, works well with the patient, and I think he is a person that really is into developing the craft that, you know, makes a success for a patient surgery. And not just that, he is a person that’s like a leader in bariatric surgery, and I think a good part of him, too, is, he really deals with the patient one-on-one.

He wouldn’t let somebody else take ownership of that patient that they have had. From ER, when they come in, from the OR when they come in - he has that command that he is in charge, and I think that’s what the program should have–a person that could carry that program and be in charge of, even small details to the biggest details that you could ever have.

I love the job that I do because I see the good outcome of patients, especially when they come in to you and give you a big hug and tell you that “Hey, look at me now. I should have done it a little bit earlier than this,” and the best thing that they will always tell me is thank you so much for being there for us when we really needed somebody to talk to about weight loss surgery.
