VIDEO: Amelia Barcenas – During A Patient’s Bariatric Procedure, Why Is It Important For You To Be There?

Patient coordinator Amelia Barcenas explains why it is good for her to be with patients during their bariatric procedures.

Amelia:
It is important for me and Dr. Dahiya that I go with him in surgery because the patient sees me from the office, is acquainted of what my job is in the office, at the same time carrying it to the OR. It’s a different touch, that the patient would feel that they are really important, that it’s a family, we are there for them.

That provides a higher level of quality of care that we rendered our patient because no other coordinator will go to the OR and extend their hand in the OR and make sure that the patient have everything that they would need in a hospital.

Let me give you an example. I used to be a scrub nurse in the OR, and I know that when a patient comes in, in that OR table they are all nervous, and when I get into OR and the patient sees me that I was there, the first thing that they are going to tell me, “Thank you so much, that you are here with me and I am so scared.”

That gives you a little bit feeling of hey, the importance of a person being in the OR with that patient is the number one priority of our program because of the comfort level that we could provide them going into surgery.
