Four Tips for Living Well with Psoriasis

Regular Physical Exercise

Obese individuals have a higher risk for developing psoriasis. Integrating regular physical activity into your day is part of a healthy lifestyle plan. Consult your physician before beginning an exercise program. Start with 15 minutes of stretching with flexibility exercises. Focus on building muscles to burn more calories and put less strain on joints. Daily walks with properly fitting walking shoes and water exercises, from swimming to water walking, are two great ways to build strength and flexibility. Photo: Getty Images

Consume a Healthy Diet

Developing good eating habits is important to live well with psoriasis. Establish a schedule to eat several small meals each day, which can keep you from getting hungry. Eat a balanced diet of whole-grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat sources of protein. Maintain a healthy weight. Work with your physician to determine your healthy weight. Watch food portions, use sugar and salt in moderation and limit your consumption of foods high in fat and cholesterol. Be careful of foods that may interact with your medications. Limit alcohol consumption because alcohol can negatively interact with certain medications. Quit smoking. Photo: Getty Images

Reduce Stress

Though the cause of psoriasis is unknown, there appears to be a correlation between the immune system of genetically susceptible individuals and the environment. Stress can trigger the initial onset or aggravate an existing condition. Manage stress levels with yoga, meditation, regular exercise and relaxation techniques. Focus on Emotional Health

Psoriasis puts a chronic strain upon your emotional health. Feelings can range from depression and low self-esteem to frustration. Those unfamiliar with the condition may react with initial discomfort, curiosity or rude stares. Use this opportunity to educate them by presenting information clearly and patiently. Build your own support system to cope with your emotions. Support groups provide emotional support, opportunities for exchanging information, and decrease the sense of isolation. Photo: Getty Images
