Mackenzie Phillips' Incestuous Affair

Mackenzie Phillips, daughter of John Phillips from The Mamas and the Papas went on Oprah yesterday and revealed that she had carried on an incestuous relationship with her father.

For thirty years Phillips harbored a secret that would be revealed on a TV talk show. According to the One Day at a Time star, the relationship started when her father, who had allegedly been the one to teach her how to roll a joint and snort cocaine at the tender age of 14, raped her at the age of 18. “I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father" Phillips says, "Your father is supposed to protect you, not f*** you.”

Phillips goes on to admit that the relationship did not end after the alleged rape, it proceeded from non-consensual to a consensual relationship that lasted over a decade. What put an end to the incestuous relationship between a father and a daughter? "I became pregnant." Mackenzie Phillips was seeing her son's father at the same time she was carrying a relationship with John Phillips and didn't know who that father of the baby was. So, she got an abortion and that was the end of that long father-daughter relationship.

Much discussion has ensued after the airing of this Oprah show. What are your thoughts on this story by Mackenzie Phillips?

Yes, Diane. It is hard to read or hear. It's amazing how we think all celebrities have perfect lives and, in truth, some of them are worse off than us Jane Does.

Thank you so much for posting the clips!

Wow! What a terrible secret for her to keep for slow long. Brave for her to come forward now. I hadn't seen the story, so thanks Diane for the link to Oprah. I just watched a few clips then and am feeling shocked from her honest revelations.

Her story is certainly difficult and uncomfortable to hear and read about, isn't it?

I saw the interview, and Phillips was sober (for about a year now) and seemed credible. She clearly has had a long, rough road of it, but said she decided to tell her story because the secret of it was imprisoning her. She hopes it might also help someone else in an incestuous situation.

If you would like to see clips of the interview itself or read an excerpt from her book, "High on Arrival," you can do so at Oprah's site:
