Dr. Thomson describes the relationship between folate and alcohol consumption.

Dr. Thomson:
So there’s an interaction between alcohol and folate, in that people who drink a lot of alcohol can deplete their folate levels. And folate plays a role in metallation of tissue and tissue health, and so what may be happening is simply insufficient folate nutriture in relation to alcohol consumption. And so, when you get enough diet or dietary sources of folate, it prevents that problem.

Dr. Cynthia Thomson, Ph.D., R.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Arizona. She is a registered dietitian with a doctoral degree in nutritional sciences. She has been conducting cancer research since 1994. Dr. Thomson was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2003.
