Gina explains her first experience undergoing a D and C procedure.

Gina:
The first one was with my first doctor. He explained to me that he was going to go in, basically just scrape out the inside of my uterus, that they had discovered with the ultrasound that I did have some polyps, and the lining of my uterus was very thick. So they wanted me also at the time while they were doing the procedure to do the ablation. An ablation, it’s my understanding, they fill the uterus with a hot balloon, a balloon full of boiling water, and this way there’s no way for the cysts or the polyps to attach anymore, and I said I did not feel comfortable with that.

So they did just the D&C procedure, which is the scraping of the uterus, and I remember going in, before I went in for the procedure, the nurse said, “You are extremely anemic. You can’t ever let your blood levels get like this again. You have to be very careful.” And I thought that was interesting. I had never even met her, and I never knew I was anemic until I was getting ready to go in.

And I was a little nervous, thinking, “Oh no, am I going to be all right if they do the procedure?” But so I came out, I was cramping and a little tired, and then I did pretty well for about six months after that. I didn’t have the heavy bleeding, but the emotional stress and the panic attacks were still there, and a depression, very, very bad depression which you feel guilty for because you don’t know why. You feel like you need a reason.

If you were managing depression well with medication before a D &C, but started experiencing breakthrough depression shortly after the procedure, could this be due to the change in hormones returning to normal from the D & C, or is this more of just a coincidence?
