Dr. Aiello explains if an autoimmune disorder like rheumatoid arthritis can benefit from prolotherapy or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and discusses other conditions that can benefit from these treatments.

Dr. Aiello:
The question is if someone has an autoimmune disorder such as a rheumatoid arthritis and can we do it on them, and yes we can. I actually have a patient I am currently doing these injections on and it’s not a problem.

It’s their immune system is still functioning and we have to target the tissues that we want to heal more carefully because sometimes the tissues are very damaged and if the patients have the rheumatoid or those other types of injuries for a long time, the tissues become very thin and they are difficult to repair but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.

The conditions that we now see that we are treating with the prolotherapy and the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) that can benefit are any type of joint conditions where there’s an acute injury. It could be up to one-month old or chronic sports injury or osteoarthritis.

Any kind of degenerative arthritis over time and I have treated anywhere from 18-year-olds to 85-year-olds. I have treated their backs, their shoulders, their hips, their knees, their necks, their elbows, any joint that is having a painful situation can be treated.
